Quick Reads: How do you know if your loved one needs memory care?

 3-5 minute read.

Many people assume that if their loved one is experiencing memory loss or signs of dementia, they need memory care. (Quick Read: What’s the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia?)

But, many seniors with mild to moderate memory loss thrive in a regular assisted living neighborhood.

Each senior and each situation is unique. So, determining whether a senior will benefit more from assisted living or from memory care requires an assessment by trained care staff at the community, in coordination with the senior’s physician.

During an assessment, these are some of the key areas staff and physicians evaluate:

Safety. Memory care is usually the best choice if a senior can no longer reasonably assess their own safety. For example, without close supervision they might leave their home in the middle of the night.

Social Behavior. Alzheimer’s and other dementias can lead to changes in social behaviors. Sometimes, these social changes can isolate a senior from others. In a memory care neighborhood, changed social behaviors will be less isolating, which means a senior will be better able to engage with others and participate in daily activities.

Overall wellbeing. Where are they most likely to thrive? This is best understood by getting to know each prospective resident. If a senior is prone to mood changes, like getting extremely agitated in crowds or at night, they may feel more at ease in the intimate setting of a memory care neighborhood.

While these are general guidelines, each senior’s situation is unique. Determining whether memory care or assisted living will be the right choice requires a personalized, professional assessment. The next step is to consult with your loved one’s physician and to start getting to know the senior living communities in your area.
