Caring for Caregivers: Keeping Your Cool When the Heat is On
Learn more about the relationship between heat, mood, and caregiving, plus get tips for staying cool.
All the fun events that come along with summer, like vacations, outings, and celebrations, can make life very busy. And we wouldn’t trade it!
At the same time, when you’re looking after a senior loved one, the heat and changes in routine can add more items to your to-do list. Plus, when temperatures really soar, it’s normal to feel a bit tired or irritable.
So, if you feel a little off when the heat is on, you’re not alone. Rising temperatures and growing summer to-do lists can be a recipe for stress. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways for caregivers to keep their cool. Read on to learn more about the relationship between heat, mood, and caregiving, plus tips for staying cool when the heat is on.
The Connection Between Heat and Mood
If you tend to get a little tired and cranky on long, hot days, you are not alone.
Studies – and most people’s personal experience – show that hot weather can lead to feeling irritable. That’s due in part to the physical discomfort of being overheated, hormonal changes that occur with high heat, and (sometimes) the effects of dehydration.
Plus, heat affects sleep quality, which in turn can affect mood and concentration.
Some people are more sensitive to heat changes, including the elderly and people with chronic health conditions that are exacerbated by high heat.

Hot weather affects both physical and mental health. Signs that the high heat may be taking its toll on you or a loved one include mood changes (especially irritability), trouble concentrating, and physical symptoms like headaches and nausea.
Caregiver Stress when the Heat is On
For caregivers, summer activities can add items to the to-do list and make the logistics of caregiving more challenging. From extra accommodations on hot days to navigating other vacation schedules, it’s a lot to think about.
Caregivers may find themselves working around the vacation schedules of friends, family, and professionals they rely on. That makes scheduling your own time off more complex. (A respite stay at a senior living community can simplify this task, with everything you and your loved one need always available in one place.)
Tips to Keep Your Cool
Keep your cool when life heats up this summer. Here’s how:
- Stay well hydrated! Drink plenty of water and take it easy on alcohol and caffeine, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
- Have a laugh. Laugher is a great stress reliever. Listen to a funny podcast in the (air-conditioned) car or settle in with your favorite funny movie or TV show. Or, look for videos of dogs having a blast at the beach – whatever you find funny!
- Avoid being outside (especially with your loved one) during the hottest parts of the day.
- Do get outside when the weather is more comfortable. Being cooped up during the summer can be just as challenging as being cooped up during the winter.
- Take breaks from social media, especially feeds that get you fired up.
- Adjust your expectations. Needing to slow down and rest more when it’s hot out is normal – and healthy.
- Watch out for signs of caregiver fatigue.
- Consider a respite stay for a senior loved one. Learn more about respite care here.
